CINCINNATI - January 27th, 2008 - Fellowship, patriotic music, and a candlelight prayer were all a part of the evening where 29 Cincinnati area Veterans were honored for their service on Sunday night in Colerain Township. Over 100 people attended the event including the Veterans and their guests. Staff Sergeant Les Edwards an original Tuskegee Airmen who served from 1942-1945 was a featured speaker and later honored with the group of Veterans. Also in attendance were special guest's Jeff Ritter, Colerain Township Trustee Board President and Jim Breech, the former kicker of the Cincinnati Bengal's who appeared in two Super Bowl's with the Bengal's. Each Veteran received dinner provided by the Church, a special prayer scroll from the Dayspring Yellow Ribbon Support Group and a Certificate of Appreciation from The Thank You Foundation. The group of Veterans represented the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines and just about every era from WWII to the present. Many of those honored were Purple Heart recipients and several had received medals for valor during their service. Most all of them though came not for themselves but for their brothers and sisters who could not be with them. Reverend Marsha Webster offered the blessing and Boy Scout Troop #640 served as color guard. Marcia Iker of the Dayspring Yellow Ribbon Support Group reminded everyone that "Freedom is not Free" and spoke to the importance remembering Veterans and supporting the troops. Marcia's husband, Walter served in World War II, and has two sons both serving in the Army. Kim Cornett who is the Evangelism Committee Chair worked closely with The Thank You Foundation to plan and organize the event and members of the Church volunteered to cook and serve dinner, John Guinn, President of The Thank You Foundation stated, "This was such a wonderful event. It is always an honor and a privilege to be able to say thank you to a Veteran and while maybe saying thank you isn't enough, it is a start". "Looking through the list of names and seeing the history and sacrifice that is represented you quickly realize that we can never fully repay them for their service. |
