Becky Minger, Miss Ohio 2010
Becky began her involvement with the Miss Ohio Scholarship Program in 2006. After 5 tries and 3 times winning the position of first runner up, she was crowned Miss Ohio on June 19, 2010. She is now preparing to compete for the prestigious title of Miss America 2011 and begin a nationwide tour, traveling 20,000 miles a month across the country. Miss America will celebrate its 90th Anniversary Live on ABC from Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas!
Growing up, Becky struggled with her self esteem as a shy student with a learning disability; she felt separated from her peers and was a victim of bullying. Her platform, "Discovering You, Empowering You: A Movement for Youth Development" has grown and changed, but still focuses on four main points; building and utilizing a Healthy Self Image, Respecting Yourself and Others, Setting Goals, and Recognizing avenues of Support, as a way to help children with their self esteem.
She has written a curriculum, called "Discovering You!"©, reviewed by a family psychologist, an esteemed educator and a marketing expert which was adopted by The YMCA of Greater Toledo, and a number of schools. After receiving a grant from YIPEE! (Youth In Philanthropy Encouraging Excellence) and the validation of these teens, the program will continue in the Toledo area. As her platform has taken shape over the years, she is now beginning to focus her work not only on self esteem, but a movement to empower students, to stop bullying, and to help prevent youth violence.
As Miss Ohio, Becky began her work with The Thank You Foundation, and through her involvement quickly became devoted to help grow the mission of appreciation to our service members and their families. As Miss Ohio, and a new team member, she is an advocate for our military children and families and plans to utilize her time as Miss Ohio to encourage people around the country to support our troops and their families and to show appreciation for their service and bravery.
"It's such a privilege to be a part of an amazing organization like The Thank You Foundation, and I am honored to serve our troops, veterans, and their families in every capacity I can. I am fortunate enough to have the opportunity as Miss Ohio to honor our Hero's through my work and partnership with The Thank You Foundation. Thank You to our service members, it's because of you that we live everyday with opportunity and freedom."
John Guinn - Founder
John Guinn is a Veteran of the US Army and was born into a military family. John's Grandfather William V. Guinn is a World War II Veteran, seeing action in both the Battle of the Bulge and Normandy, was awarded a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in action. John's father Vernon (David) Guinn served in the US Army during the Viet Nam era. John has several uncles and cousins who have also served in the US Armed Forces. However, John's primary inspiration for the Thank You Foundation came from his mom, Juanita.
Juanita Guinn worked endlessly for the Am Vets Organization and served as President of the Ladies Auxiliary, Post 24, in Dayton Ohio. Juanita believed that gratitude and appreciation for Soldiers and Veterans should always be a priority and that without exception our support and respect should be presented publicly. Juanita passed away of cancer in March of 2002. The Thank You Foundation is a fitting tribute to the work she did.
In 2010, John was inducted into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame. The first ever Veterans Hall of Fame in the nation, the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame recognizes those that have honorably served their country and have continued to serve and inspire their fellow citizens with their deeds and accomplishments throughout their lifetime.
In 2008 John was named an official Kentucky Colonel by order of Governor Steve Beshear and Trey Grayson, Secretary of State of Kentucky.
John regularly speaks and presents at events honoring Veterans and has served on several event planning committees including the Cincinnati VA Welcome Home Celebrations in 2008 and 2009, as well as the annual Tribute to Veterans with U.S. Army Major Brad Wenstrup.
